Historical population estimates are from Paul Norman, Area characteristics: Great Britain 1971 to 2011, version 1, published through Mendeley Data under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0. We select the relevant statistical areas, round fractional estimates to whole people and combine them with 2021 counts only after checking boundary continuity. These charts do not reproduce historical household records or individual census returns. Earlier town observations are independently transcribed from public-domain historical publications, with the original page and historical geography identified beside the figures.

Historic England

Contains Historic England data © Historic England 2026. National Heritage List for England data is used under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Linked records remain the authority for designation details.

Maps and historical writing

Map tile attribution appears on each interactive map. Boundaries identify their source and licence in the downloadable geographic record.

Historical summaries list their sources on the relevant place page. Rights in linked photographs, archival records and publications remain with their respective owners. Open dataset licences do not automatically license linked media.
